Christmas on Main Street
Enjoy the wonders of a small-town Christmas amidst the gas-lit Main Street and surrounding hills of Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, by experiencing Wellsboro’s Annual Christmas on Main Street celebration on the second weekend in December. Christmas on Main Street recognizes Wellsboro’s history of supplying Christmas ornaments to virtually all of the United States during World War II when imports of hand-blown ornaments from Germany was not possible. During the war, Wellsboro’s own Corning Glass plant’s ribbon machine, which was used to mass-produce light bulbs, was engineered to produce Christmas ornaments, called Shiny Brites, so that those in the United States could still purchase ornaments. The tradition of Shiny Brites continued in Wellsboro for several decades. During Christmas on Main Street, visitors and locals can enjoy Shiny Brite ornament displays featured in various businesses as well as enjoy holiday shopping, live music, demonstrations and other events throughout the weekend.
Stay at the Penn Wells Hotel and enjoy our Christmas on Main Street package, which includes 2 nights lodging, Sunday’s Santa Brunch, a passport for the historic Christmas ornament display tour, and a commemorative Christmas ornament (while supplies last) included with your stay. If you plan on Christmas shopping, consider adding a gift card to Dunham’s Department Store to your package at a discounted rate. Dunham’s is one of the only remaining independent department stores in the United States and holiday shoppers are often heard to say, “I remember when we had a store like this in our town.” But in Wellsboro, you can still experience the traditional Christmas season of your childhood.
Christmas on Main Street weekend features a variety of events including ornament displays, trolley rides, chocolate samples at Highland Chocolates, hot chocolate and coffee tastings at Café 1905 where we proudly serve Starbucks coffee; a $1 movie event (“Elf” at 11 a.m. Saturday) at the Arcadia Theatre, the art deco theatre adjacent to the Historic Penn Wells, vsits with Santa at the Deane Center, live music, a live nativity, and other events and specials at the independent shops located up and down Wellsboro’s Main Street and more.
On Sunday, Santa Claus comes to the Penn Wells to greet children young and old, checks to see who has been naughty or nice, and poses for photographs to capture the treasured moment. Our Santa Brunch is accompanied by our pianist playing all the Christmas classics, but the highlight for many is brunch itself. Enjoy a freshly made omelette or Belgian waffle, eggs Benedict, pancakes, French toast, and a dessert buffet that will wow kids and grownups alike.
