By January we usually have ample cold and snow for downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing.

Winter can be an unpredicatable season in our section of Pennsylvania. Usually by January we have ample cold and snow for enjoyment of activities such as downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. But it is best to contact us in advance of your visit to ensure that conditions are prime for the activities you have planned.

Cross-country skiing is a favorite winter activity that our visitors enjoy. Hiking trails, service roads, fields, frozen lakes, and old railroad grades throughout the county serve as great skiing areas. The Pine Creek Rail Trail is a favorite location for cross-country skiing, due to its continuously flat terrain. Cross-country ski rentals are available at Country Ski and Sports, which is located just down the street from the Penn Wells Hotel. Snowshoeing is also popular in the area, as it can be done in any of our State Parks and on public land throughout the county.

Visitors enjoy hiking and snowshoeing in snowy Wellsboro, PASnowmobiling is snow-dependent, of course, but it is permitted in Tioga State Forest, which offers approximately 177 miles of snowmobile trails. Registered snowmobiles may use the network on state forest daily after the close of deer season. There are no ATV trails.

Downhill skiing at Ski Sawmill is perfect for families and beginners. Located just a 35-minute drive from the Penn Wells, Ski Sawmill offers a dozen trails for skiers and snowboarders, and also provides plenty of family fun with its tubing run.
