Exploring Wellsboro, Pennsylvania

It’s easy to tell that you’ve arrived in downtown Wellsboro, thanks to the historical and charming gas-lit lampposts that line the main corridor and downtown historic district.

Wellsboro, Pennsylvania fall colors rise above its signature gas lightsHere, the natural beauty of “Pennsylvania Grand Canyon Country” comes together with rich history to give visitors a memorable vacation in a warm and welcoming small town.

As you walk the streets of downtown Wellsboro, you may feel as if you have stepped back in time onto the set of a Frank Capra film, into a vibrant small town that offers plenty for visitors to do. The downtown includes an Art Deco movie house called the Acadia Theatre that shows movies nightly, numerous cafés, restaurants, and bars, and of course, boutique shopping. Wellsboro charms in part due to its abundance of independent merchants. Instead of an unappealing big box store or strip mall, the shopping district is anchored by the family-owned Dunham’s Department Store, offering a unique shopping experience where you are more likely to find yourself having coffee with the third- and fourth-generation owners than to feel like you are shopping in Anyplace, USA.

Located immediately across the street from the Penn Wells Hotel, Dunham’s is one of the few family-owned and -operated stores of its kind left in the country. Dunham’s has been providing quality products, outstanding value, and exceptional customer service for more than a century. From 3,000 square feet to over 35,000 square feet, Dunham’s has grown and kept pace with the times, yet the quality shopping experience remains the same.

You won’t lack for places to rest your feet and have a snack while strolling downtown Wellsboro. We are partial to Café 1905,located in Dunham’s Department Store, which offers the Starbucks® line of coffees, espresso drinks, frappuccinos and teas, along with lunch items and baked goods. We also recommend the classic dining in the Hotel’s Mary Wells Dining Room, or the Penn Wells Lounge when you are ready for a cocktail or craft beverage, which is served in front of our roaring fireplace during the winter season. You’ll find plenty of other options as well as you walk up and down Main Street.

The next time you’re looking for a restorative and fun vacation, whether it’s one day, a long weekend, or a whole week, consider downtown Wellsboro. We look forward to welcoming you!
