Here is some more information straight from the Tioga County Visitor’s Bureau:

“Wellsboro, PA was chosen to be the third stop and the only stop in PA in Universal Studio’s sixth season of Fireball Run, “Northern Exposure” this fall. Fireball Run is an interactive road rally where 40 teams compete for 8 days, travel through 15 cities and cover over 2,500 miles. The teams will begin in Independence, OH and end in Bangor, ME. In each destination city, teams will participate in a scavenger hunt where they are provided with clues to complete missions specific to the local area in a timely fashion for points. To navigate the route and score, teams will use everything (and everyone) at their disposal to solve the provided clues. Fireball Run will be in Wellsboro on September 24 & 25, 2012.

Wellsboro has their own team racing! We are team #33, Team VisitTiogaPA.com. It is made up of Jim Meade, owner of Bear Lodges, and Mark Hamilton, Commissioner for Tioga County.

Be a part of all the action!

Monday, September 24- Activities will be taking place around the Green between 2 and 6 PM. There will be action all around downtown Wellsboro, with a special concentration on the Green.

Tuesday, September 25- The teams head out of Wellsboro early on their way to their next destination. The starting line is on the Green. Teams will be there around 8:15, speakers at around 9, send off on or before 9:30 AM.

Today 100 men and women from the US, Europe and Canada hopped aboard their motorcycles and set off to travel across the country, from Newburgh, NY to San Francisco, CA in 16 days. Even more impressive, they’ll be making this trip on vehicles built prior to 1930! They arrived in Wellsboro this afternoon for a one night stay-over at the Penn Wells.

The Pre-1930 Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run is named after Erwin George “Cannon Ball” Baker, who earned his nickname after riding a 7 hp, two-speed electric Indian motorcycle 3,378.9 miles coast to coast in 11 days, 12 hours and 10 minutes in 1914. Baker was known for these point-to-p0int driving records, often getting sponsored by the company of whatever vehicle he drove.

Baker rode alone, stopping at post offices along the way to get a diary stamped for proof that he went the whole way. In the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico he experienced heat exhaustion and hallucinations. He also carried a Smith and Wesson 38-caliber long barrel revolver, which he used to shoot wild dogs that attacked him as he rode through remote Indian reservations.

While today’s riders don’t have to worry so much about a lack of water or wild dogs, the ride is far from an easy one, typically traveling 150-300 miles a day, with only one day of rest half way through in South Dakota. All of the bikes have original engines in them, although they are allowed to have some upgrades such as new wheels and lights.

Shinya Kimura arrives in Wellsboro on his 1915 Indian Twin motorcycle.

We are happy to host the riders after their first day of travel and wish them the best of luck as they journey onward!

See more pictures of the riders in Wellsboro on our facebook page.

Fall is one of the most beautiful times to visit Tioga County and Wellsboro. The region is known across the Commonwealth for its gorgeous flaming fall foliage, but we also have some fun family-friendly and couples-friendly events this time of year.

Here are some upcoming September events that may be of interest to you as you plan your stay:

SEPTEMBER 2

Fly-In Breakfast –A Fly-In Breakfast is served in the Main Hanger of the PA Grand Canyon Airport by the Grand Canyon Pilots Association. Takes place the Sunday before Labor Day.

http://pagrandcanyonairport.com

SEPTEMBER 22-29

Fireball Adventurally – The Fireball Run Adventurally Series is an action packed, one week, 2,500 mile adventure rally (AKA adventurally). The mission and destination based rally is filmed for broadcast and annually released on home video. The fun is on the run… Its Bentley vs. Lamborghini, Camaro vs. Charger, and Motor Home vs. Movie Car is this “run what ya brung” competition.

http://www.fireballrun.com/2012/northern-exposure

SEPTEMBER 28-29

Fabulous 1890s Weekend – The Weekend revolves around the fact that the world’s first night football game was played by Mansfield University in Smythe Park on September 28, 1892. The Weekend gets started on Friday afternoon, September 28, 2012 and runs through the evening. Saturday kicks off with The 1890s Parade at 11 a.m.

The 1890s Museum Tent grows more popular every year with displays of local history. Chester Bailey and family create the displays each year and are always on hand to share information, memories and stories. Genealogist Joyce Tice will also have a display. Joyce’s knowledge and passion for history is a great addition to the Museum Tent.

The climax of the Weekend is the reenactment of the World’s First Night Football Game. Using the actual rules of 1892, the game is hard-hitting, humorous and accurate. University and area resident volunteers don uniforms actually worn by actors in the General Electric commercial which aired around the world for several years.

Fireworks set to music create a loud, exciting, colorful end to a weekend full of music, food, family and fun.
